Sara is the sitting mayor while her younger brother, Sebastian, is vice mayor. Paolo Duterte, her brother, represents the 1st District of Davao in Congress. While Sara's filing of candidacy for reelection would normally silence calls for and speculation over a national run, it should be remembered that just six years ago, President Duterte first filed for mayor before eventually filing his candidacy for president. The older Duterte in filed for reelection as Davao City mayor but months later withdrew this and filed his candidacy for president instead.
Sara Duterte-Carpio, who has been widely tipped to run to succeed her father, did not say why she was withdrawing from the mayor contest, but told supporters on Facebook that further announcements would be made later.
The year-old has led opinion polls throughout this year as the most preferred candidate for president, but has said she does not want that job. The Philippines holds elections in May for positions from president down to governors, mayors and local officials. The window for changing candidates expires on Nov. Duterte-Carpio has repeatedly said she was not interested in running for president.

Bato, who is also under investigation by the ICC, was the architect of "Oplan: Tokhang," the government's anti-drug campaign, when he was the head of the Philippine National Police.
