It could be said of Satan as well as Leviathan if not more so of Satan :. This also means that the description of Behemoth in the previous chapter may also be a representation of the strength and seeming confidence that the apparently unassailable Adversary has.
He deals with him here in the form of Leviathan, describing him to Job with the same sort of symbolic picture-language He uses in Revelation. God called Job to consider these unconquerable beasts, who each in their own way were examples of Satan and his power. In this, God allowed Job to consider the fact that he could not stand before the power of Satan without God empowering him.
Job thought that he was all alone through his ordeal; indeed he felt he was alone. We eat Leviathan for breakfast. It takes a very big God, and a very big faith in God, to be able to absorb so much evil. Leviathan seems to be endlessly sprawling, gargantuan, invincible. But the essence of the gospel is that the love of God is greater than any evil. God ends His words to Job without ever telling him the story behind the story.
Job was left ignorant about the contest between God and Satan that prompted his whole crisis though perhaps God later told him. It was important that God did not tell Job the reasons why; then Job can be a continuing comfort and inspiration and example to those who suffer without an explanation. In more recent years, with the discovery of dinosaurs, has come the thought that Behemoth described a dinosaur. Some are inclined to see them as existing with Job. And others as reconstructed from fossilized bones found in the region.
A third view of Behemoth is that it was a mythological creature. This view will be discussed later in this article. Leviathan is the second creature mentioned by God. The entire 41 st chapter of Job is dedicated to this creature.
Leviathan is described as a fierce and untamable beast. It is covered with impenetrable armor and has a mouth full of deadly teeth. Leviathan breathes fire and smoke and churns up the sea like an ink pot.
Nothing on earth is its equal. Unlike Behemoth, Leviathan is mentioned elsewhere in the Scripture. Psalm refers to the heads of Leviathan, implying a multiheaded beast.
Psalm describes Leviathan frolicking in the vast sea. And Isaiah describes God slaying Leviathan, a coiling serpent and sea monster. One other possible reference to Leviathan is in Genesis The NIV starts this verse with God creating the great creatures of the sea.
The word creatures is translated here as tannin. It is common to view Leviathan as a crocodile. But some aspects of this creature are hard to reconcile with a crocodile. A multi-headed, fire breathing sea monster does not come close to the description of a crocodile. AB 27 Iron it treats like straw AC and bronze like rotten wood.
