Once he set his sight on the way of the sword, Takeshi become engrossed in his training, as shown when he watched the DVD sent by Future Squalo that shows all of his matches. And when facing an opponent who uses sword, Takeshi wishes to fight them as a swordsman, which is evident when he confronts Genkishi and even got excited at the prospect of duelling him. In school, his grades are around the same as Tsuna's because of his focus on baseball. However, it is shown that once he sits down and actually learns the theory, he can do any problem easily.
When it comes to the sport he loves, Takeshi is very focused to the point he can't restrain his strength. Despite not being smart academically wise, he has shown an inner wisdom and tact belying his age. This was shown when he scolded Gokudera on being a proper right-hand man. He has the tendency to believe that everything is a game, including the Vongola which he believes to be some sort of 'mafia role-playing game'.
His future self, however, seems to have finally acknowledged the reality of the situation, and by the time of the Future Arc, present Takeshi has also gotten a better grasp on his position as a guardian.
Future Takeshi still shows a bit of his easy-going self but has become more mature and serious. Takeshi is a very skilled fighter. Despite his easy-going personality, Takeshi has shown that he has hidden talent as a hitman. In fact, Reborn clearly sees Takeshi's potential and often mentions to Tsuna that Takeshi is a natural born hitman, mentioning as well that he is the best athlete in the entire Vongola Famiglia.
His fast reflexes and athletically conditioned-body give him a natural advantage and he is shown to be able to dodge cannon fire, wayward fireworks, and even attacks from Hibari. Takeshi is also a quick learner, remembering all 8 forms of the Shigure Soen Ryu despite only being shown once. He also manages to develop a new form of the style, the 9th form, in a life-or-death situation, earning him respect and acknowledgement from Superbia Squalo. During the Kokuyo Arc , Takeshi is ranked in second place for the strongest students at Namimori Middle School by Futa , indicating that he is even stronger than Hayato.
During his brief fight against an injured Chikusa Kakimoto , Takeshi is shown to be fast enough to dodge his opponent's yo-yos and cut the strings simultaneously. Chikusa chose to retreat and let Ken fight Takeshi later, rather than fight him. During his battle against Ken Joshima , Takeshi was overwhelmed by his opponent's various Animal Channels and couldn't fight back because of the dark environment and having his sword broken.
With no other options, Takeshi allows Ken to bite his arm and uses the opportunity to defeat his opponent with a strike to the head from his broken sword handle. When he faces Lancia , Takeshi is rather easily beaten by the possessed man with two attacks from his Steel Serpent Ball. Lancia claims that he didn't even use a third of his strength against Takeshi.
Squalo noted that Yamamoto lacked the knowledge of a sword fighting style, which made it easy to defeat him. However, once Takeshi received proper sword training, he's able to overpower the more experienced Squalo.
Even so, Takeshi still has yet to achieve his full potential in his swordsmanship due to lack of dedication since he's devoted to baseball. Yamamoto thinks Tsuna is amazing and treats him as a very close friend after the latter saved his life. Although he is rather naive towards what is really happening during the series, Yamamoto is very devoted and loyal to Tsuna. He fights for him, protecting him above all else. His protective sense to Tsuna was first hinted in the manga when Yamamoto declared that he will be Tsuna's Right Hand Man while Gokudera will just be the ear lobe. In the Future Arc, Yamamoto showed great distress at not being able to beat Daisy in the Choice battle, thinking that he had somehow disappointed Tsuna and the Guardians.
However, thanks to Tsuna, he managed to let go of this distress during the second trial of the Guardian Inheritance Test. Yamamoto thinks of Gokudera as a friend and although Gokudera does not seem to admit this fact, he also thinks of Yamamoto as a trusted ally. However, there seems to be somewhat of a one-sided rivalry going on. Gokudera believes Yamamoto is trying to become Tsuna's right hand man, when in reality, he is simply being his clueless self and enjoying their competitions.
They therefore push each other to do their best and become stronger because of each other. Gokudera also enjoys calling Yamamoto a "baseball freak" whenever he is acting laid-back in a tough situation, when he references something to baseball, or when he does not know something.
In the future, the present Yamamoto scolds Gokudera for his coldness towards him. He says that he has no right to be Tsuna's right hand man right now, as the right hand man's job is to gather and unite the Guardians, not turn away from them. He goes back to being happy once Gokudera chooses to accept him. Reborn is the one who "found" Yamamoto and consequently made him join the Vongola.
He has very high expectations of Yamamoto's talents and eventually becomes his tutor in the Future Arc. Reborn says that Yamamoto is a natural-born hitman. Yamamoto, on the other hand, thinks that Reborn is an infant who likes to play with very advanced toys such as guns and bombs. After training with Reborn, he has acknowledged him as being powerful and is interested in hearing his secrets, which Reborn revealed to him after their training. Reborn seems to like sitting on Yamamoto's shoulder.
Squalo is the first opponent Yamamoto faced who uses a sword. After a humiliating defeat at Squalo's hands Yamamoto trained extremely hard to learn the Shigure Souen Style in hopes of beating Squalo.
Squalo can be seen as the oil that strengthened Yamamoto's desire to become stronger and his rival at swordsmanship. After defeating Squalo in the Rain battle Squalo says that Yamamoto has what it takes to become a great Swordsman, acknowledging him.
He, like Reborn, also has high hopes for Yamamoto. In the Future Arc, Squalo sends Reborn and Yamamoto a video of the battles he won in order to become the Sword Emperor, helping Yamamoto and refiring his determination.
In the Future Arc, it is also mentioned that Vongola has two Swords masters; one of which is Yamamoto, the other Squalo. Squalo seems to get irritated at Yamamoto as he chooses baseball over swordsmanship. Squalo is one of the few who notice that Yamamoto is not at the inheritance ceremony and that he is an illusion,. Unlike others who afraid of him because of his appearance, Yamamoto treats Kaoru nicely and already regard him as his friend, being the only one who helps him when it comes to baseball and to the point that he saved him from Daemon Spade's killing blow and forgave Kaoru even though he had nearly killed him.
Kaoru also regards Yamamoto as his friend, feeling guilty for attacking him to the verge of death and due to this, finally losing his pride because he could not bear to fight Yamamoto because he saved him and said that he wished to continue being friends with him before he was imprisoned by Vindice.
