This is sort of the inverse of all of those articles about blue light keeping you awake at night and why you should never work in bed. That brings us to selecting a place to read that is conducive to sustained focus. For a long time, my favorite summer reading spot was an upright iron chair on my deck…because it was the only piece of outdoor furniture I owned and the ground has ants.
I finally sprung for a pair of lounge chairs and discovered that they were much too comfortable for a sustained reading session.
The goal is to be comfortable but not too comfortable. An upright chair is even better. You might also consider a change of scenery to break the connection in your brain between reading and sleep. What better time could there be to read without any fear of fatigue? The downside: This is probably more of a weekend or holiday thing. If you need get ready and go to work or school, settling in with a book instead is the last thing you should do. Audiobooks On the one hand, audiobooks are a great way to get through your reading list while driving, doing things around the house, etc.

So, when you start reading, your body knows that it is time to start transitioning into sleep mode. If you want to keep your routine fresh and exciting, switch up the times of day you read your books.
Try starting off your morning with your favorite book and a cup of coffee. Picture the place you read most. Is it your bed? The couch? A hammock? What do all of these places have in common? They are comfortable, personal spaces. We often, if not always, read in spaces that are incredibly comfortable, because it is an enjoyable activity.
The comfort of the space makes it much easier to fall asleep. Even sitting at a desk chair, your posture will make you more alert and attentive and less likely to fall asleep. Reading calms the mind. This is the number one reason we fall asleep when we read. Reading takes your mind off all the other stressors in your life and transports you into a different world entirely.
