A fine also applies to the keeping or releasing noxious fish species. Some exotic and native birds may be kept privately in Queensland. Some species may be kept without a licence, whereas others may only be kept with an appropriate licence.
Contact the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection for further information. If you intend to keep or more poultry, including caged birds, you will need to register your property. You may not bring live bees or used bee equipment into Queensland from Tasmania. Bee products such as comb or pollen must be frozen for 24 hours prior to entering Queensland and you must have a health certificate. If you keep one or more horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, deer or camelids camels, llama, alpaca , you will need to register your property.
Ferrets are sociable creatures and will enjoy spending time indoors with you. Mice and rats can make excellent little pets and are very popular with children. Mice are inquisitive and generally gentle, provided they are handled appropriately. They need a large house and opportunities to exercise. They are social creatures and should not be kept alone. Rats are intelligent, affectionate creatures.
They like to spend a lot of time resting and grooming themselves, and their personalities will thrive with lots of physical and mental stimulation. Rats love company, so keeping a same-sex pair is ideal.
With regular handling, rats will happily curl up on your lap for a snooze and enjoy exploring the world perched upon your shoulder. Birds are social and should be kept in at least a compatible pair. Birds should have access to a flight aviary or be given regular opportunities to fly in a safe environment such as indoors.
They are not too keen on eating from a bowl, but love to munch down crickets, cockroaches and the occasional superworm. Handy hint : Be careful of cockroaches, they can breed in the tank and suddenly there are lots of them when you go to clean it out! Cockatiels are known to be outgoing, social, comical, and, at times, feisty. They are talented whistlers and are often quite the chatterbox. They live up to 20 years. A straight-up position means he or she is startled or highly curious, when they are flattened close its head it means they are defensive, and when the crest is slightly held back and he or she has fluffed cheeks it means they are relaxed.
Being small, they are easy to manage and really delightful little birds. This lizard just needs access to water, food a few times a week and a dry tank with heating controlled with a timer. They should have a UV light, but can cope without it. When threatened, shinglebacks turn towards the threat, open their mouth wide and stick out their broad, blue tongue that contrasts with their pink mouth, which makes them look quite intimidating — but they are pretty harmless.
